Finding Cheap Dedicated Hosting

September 30, 2009

When shopping for a dedicated hosting provider, how important is it to find the cheapest deal?

Sure, everybody likes saving money, and it is an important thing to find the lowest cost, especially these days.  However, you have to remember not to sell out when it comes to dedicated hosting features you might need.  Be sure to have a good estimate or checklist of:

  • All the Services You Need
  • All the Services You Want (but don’t really have to have)

This will give you a little more negotiating room when it comes to settle for a bottom dollar price.

When push comes to shove, you have to do your best to find the dedicated hosting plan that is the cheapest deal and best suits your web hosting needs.  If you find a dedicated host that doesn’t get meet your price you are willing to pay, be sure to contact them to see if there are any coupons or deal that could be applied to lower the price just a little ‘bit more.

What is Green Hosting?

September 25, 2009

When looking for the perfect place to call home in the dedicated hosting world, you might turn towards a dedicated hosting provider that is green.  What is green hosting all about?  Let me see if I can wrap your mind around the idea here.

The idea behind green hosting or eco-friendly hosting is a simple one.  They promise that their company in a whole (counting the servers they are hosting on) do not negatively impact the environment.

Now this can be done in a number of different ways.  Some will purchase carbon credits, to offset the carbon dioxide they are putting out into the atmosphere. Others might do it through virtualization, a type of web hosting that will share resources among customers, so you can more effectively use the servers hardware.  One more way would be to use more energy friendly servers.  Using severs that need less power is a great way to lower the cost of hosting, and help the environment at the same time.

Now I wouldn’t say that green hosting is the only aspect you should look into when it comes to dedicated hosting – but it is worth seeing how they do it, if they do it.  Never be afraid to ask that of your dedicated hosting provider.

What is Dedicated Server RAM?

September 23, 2009

RAM in the dedicated web hosting world, is the amount of Random-access memory a server has.  Not to get too geeky on you, it takes the form of integrated circuits that allow stored data to be accessed in any order.

RAM is really needed for your computer whenever you decide to perform an operation. Let’s say that you want to do some word processing on your computer. All the letters that you type are going into a temporary file that is stored in the RAM. If your computer shut down in the middle of your document creation and you powered it back up, most likely your information would be lost. Why? Because it was stored in RAM.

The same thing could be said for your dedicated server.  The more RAM it has, the more processes it can take care of at the same time.  Much of the web hosting lingo out there makes more sense if you think of it in relation to your personal computer.  The two things are much more similar than they are different, that is for sure.

Dedicated Hosting for Businesses

September 21, 2009

Why is dedicated hosting so important to business?

Well, for the most part it all comes down to reliability.  You don’t want your important business web site hosted on the same sever space a Pokemon fan page is on, that might get hacked – and bring your web site down along with it.

Power is also something that many businesses are looking for, and you can’t get more CPU or Bandwidth on any other web hosting plan.  Dedicated hosting makes it possible to get your web site going and keep it running, by having more server resources to work with.

So there you have two reasons why businesses turn towards dedicated hosting.  Know of anymore reasons?  Feel free to leave them in the comments!

When Not to Get Dedicated Hosting

September 16, 2009

There are many that might think a dedicated hosting plan is perfect for everything, however there are some situation where that might not be the case at all.

Now true, a dedicated hosting plan does provide the flexibility you need to run different scripts and custom installed software, however many times a VPS or virtual private server might also work in that situation.  You can also often get VPS hosting plans for a fraction of the cost of a dedicated plan.

Then again, dedicated hosting plans can provide you with much more incentive when it comes to horse power – mainly CPU and RAM usage.

So the debate goes on, and you should find out all the facts before you decide to go one way or the other.

CPU Updates in Dedicated Hosting

September 14, 2009

When you are out there searching for your perfect dedicated web hosting provider, you need to keep in mind if you need and if you have the ability to upgrade your server’s CPU power and usage.

During stressful server events, you might notice that even the best CPU on the planet looks to be a little stretched to it’s limits.  So to help you out in this event, make sure your dedicated hosting provider gives you the ability to upgrade your CPU usage as needed.

Some of the best CPU specs available these days include:

  • Intel Celeron 2.0ghz
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33ghz
  • Intel Quad-Core Intel? Xeon? 1.6ghz

It might come at a price, but that is a small price to pay to make sure your dedicated hosting environment stays up and running.

Dedicated Differences

September 10, 2009

So what are the differences between dedicated hosting and shared hosting?  It can be described easily, if you put it in food terms. (Yeah, I know – a little strange, but follow me on this one).

Dedicated hosting is a type of hosting plan or account that gives you more access to server resources and the ability to modify more things on the server to better suit your web sites.  You can think of it as the most expensive mouth watering steak on the men at a five star restaurant.

Shared hosting is what most people use, and is more relatable as a cookie cutter format.  Each hosting plan may have a lot of features, but they are all hosted on the same server – bulked together, and there isn’t much room to grow, if your web site is starting to meet the boundaries of your current hosting offerings.  It is much more like the Happy Meal at McDonalds.  It will not fill you up, but it does serve a purpose.

The thing to remember is that you need to do your best to find the hosting the best suits your needs first, and your budget second.
