When looking for the perfect place to call home in the dedicated hosting world, you might turn towards a dedicated hosting provider that is green. What is green hosting all about? Let me see if I can wrap your mind around the idea here.

The idea behind green hosting or eco-friendly hosting is a simple one. They promise that their company in a whole (counting the servers they are hosting on) do not negatively impact the environment.

Now this can be done in a number of different ways. Some will purchase carbon credits, to offset the carbon dioxide they are putting out into the atmosphere. Others might do it through virtualization, a type of web hosting that will share resources among customers, so you can more effectively use the servers hardware. One more way would be to use more energy friendly servers. Using severs that need less power is a great way to lower the cost of hosting, and help the environment at the same time.

Now I wouldn’t say that green hosting is the only aspect you should look into when it comes to dedicated hosting – but it is worth seeing how they do it, if they do it. Never be afraid to ask that of your dedicated hosting provider.

That is not always the case. When shopping for dedicated hosting or a dedicated server, there are many factors that should come into play. You want to look at the support team behind it, the number of services you get, the ratio of “good deals” in comparison to the price you are paying. Simply picking the cheapest one will not do.

Best of the Forum and Message Board Scripts

There are a lot of message board or forum scripts out there, which are the best of the best? Well here are a few of my favorites. Vanilla – Vanilla is a unique forum script from Lussumo.com. It is an open-source, standards-compliant, multi-lingual, fully extensible discussion forum for the Web.

Professional WordPress Plugins for Advanced Webmasters

Webmasters don’t have to use WordPress to host a blog or family/personal website. Many professional webmasters are using WordPress to run fully functional websites, as there are thousands of free WordPress plugins that will assist in helping webmasters make the most of their WordPress web hosting site.

I decided to mix things up a little ‘bit today and give you a list of some of the most popular dedicated hosting tutorials we have featured here on the dedicated server hosting blog. Enjoy!

WAP and Dedicated Servers

Does a Dedicated Server package have a WAP feature/server? Just about any dedicated hosting setup will allow WAP. You’ll just need to setup Mime types and DirctoryIndex settings in web server configuration. The following guide mentions settings for both Windows and Linux servers to be setup for WAP.

Remote Access key in WHM

This is how you would setup a remote access key in Web Host Manager (WHM). The first thing you would need to do is login to WHM. From the front page, click on "Cluster/Remote Access". Next, click on "Setup Remote Access Key".

5 Good Server Monitoring Tools

Need a good monitoring tool for your server? There are several services online out there today that will give you the best in performance monitoring, availability monitoring, and traffic monitoring.

How to do a Trace Route?

Need help on doing a trace route to your dedicated hosting setup?

Backup from cPanel

Want to backup your account from cPanel?

The first step in the process would be to login to your cPanel account. Once you are on the front page, then find and click the icon marked “Backup”. This will take you to the cPanel Backup screen.

Found a Bad Dedicated Hosting Review?

We have all done it. We went out to see what reviews we could find on or about the dedicated web hosting we have now or the dedicated web hosting we are interested in picking up? Then you see it. A big, bad and nasty negative review. As your palms get sweaty, you think to yourself, “Should I read it?”. Well, I am here to tell you that you should, but take it with a grain of salt. A healthy dose of skepticism never did any harm.

Want to Run Your Own Blog Network?

Lets say you have a new dedicated hosting account, and now you want to setup your own blog network. Where should you start? I would highly suggest looking into WordPress MU. The MU stands for “multiple users”.

One recent request I have seen around the Web is, how do you install JRE on a dedicated server? Well if you are using Cent OS as your dedicated server operating system of choice, I have found a great guide to help you get going.

Thus I would like to give a short update to the blog post, since some things have changed since then. Also CentOS has been updated to Version 5.2 in the meantime.

The way I have done it with modifying the symbolic link in “/usr/bin/java/” still works, but it is not the recommended way to do it. Thus I follow here the path that the CentOS project has outlined. Where applicable I updated the link information. So, without further ado, let’s install JRE 6 or update it to the latest Version (update 6 for 6) as of today (06/26/2008).

Check out the rest of this great tutorial here:

Before somebody sets out to purchase a dedicated hosting account, they have to be able to make the case for doing so.

Joe wants to start up a YouTube-like web site, but is not sure if dedicated hosting will do the trick. In this situation, dedicated hosting may be his best bet, because this way he would be able to get all of the additional server features needed to compress the video on the server side without having to run into any issues with server resources.

Jill has a successful store on a shared hosting account, but is quickly out growing it. A dedicated hosting server could offer her a wider boundary – to where she could extend her store further without having to worry about the limitations of her hosting account.

As you can see, there are many different cases that can be made for dedicated hosting these days. You have to weigh in all your options, and the greatest of them all might be that dedicated hosting leaves a wider boundary so that you can develop your web site as you see fit.

Need help on doing a trace route to your dedicated hosting setup?

Windows Info:

1. Go to Start > Run…
2. Enter cmd and click OK.
3. At the prompt, type tracert yourdomainname and hit enter.
4. Copy and paste the results into your text file.

Note: Some people are often confused by how to copy and paste from the cmd prompt (that black window your looking at). The best way to go about this is to right click on the window (anywhere in the black part) and select “Select All”. Then to copy, hit the Ctrl + C keys on your keyboard. Then you can right click with your mouse, and select paste to paste it into your text file you are saving this information to.

Mac Info:

1. Double-click the Hard Drive icon > Applications folder > Utilities folder > Network Utility program.
2. Select the trace route tab and enter the hostname, where hostname can be a domain name, a machine name or an IP address.
3. Press Enter then copy and paste the results into your text file.

Now you should have no issues troubleshooting the connection between yourself and the server in question.

You want to be the next Facebook or MySpace, you had better have a deep pocket. Now putting aside the fact that you would need a lot of users, social praise and traffic to make this all work – according to one web site resource these are the current stats for Facebook on the hosting side of things:

30,000 databases & 1,800 db servers

1200 dedicated servers

805 caching servers

Now with any dedicated hosting provider out there you could get a good start if nothing else. Many of the social network clone scripts will run on a VPS or dedicated hosting plan too. This is just to give you a little insight on what you may be getting yourself into.

After yesterday’s article I thought I would also list an alternative way to help secure the SSH. You can also secure your ssh changing default port (22). Change the port that SSH listens for connections on:

      #Port 22

Port XX (where XX = your new portnumber)

You can choose something like 22202 or something you can remember.

You are now done editing the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file (save your changes, and quit your editor).
Another important thing dont forgot to allow the port you choose from firewall:

      /etc/apf/conf.apf

Then you add there your new ssh port. Hope you enjoyed. Any good dedicated hosting provider should be able to provide you with additional help if needed.
