Domain Name Servers (DNS) are an important part of setting up and configuring your Dedicated Server. Without them, nobody would be able to find your website online or see any of the content you have hosted there. In a Dedicated Server Hosting environment, you’ll need to create your own name servers, instead of using ready made ones as you would in a Shared Hosting environment.

So why register your own name servers? Without your own registered DNS on your dedicated server, you would be forced to have your Dedicated web host maintain an A record and point your website to the server’s primary IP address. This means that your web host is the only entity that can add subdomains, park domains, etc. Registering your own name servers also associated all content within the search engines and helps with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and getting your site ranked properly for its keywords and content. Registering your own DNS will also facilitate faster lookups for your domain on the server, resolving connections to your sites much quicker.

How much does it cost to register name servers? Your domain name registrar should offer this service completely free!

How do I register my name servers? This depends on where you registered your domain name. If you registered it with Lunarpages Dedicated Hosting, you’ll simply need to follow these easy steps:

1. Login to https://manage.opensrs.net
2. Click the “Manage Nameservers” link or change the address to
https://manage.opensrs.net/index?action=manage_nameservers
3. Scroll down to see “Create nameserver”
4. Server Hostname as –> ns1 and Server IP as primary nameserver info, we sent you.
5. Repeat the process for ns2 also with the IP of the secondary nameserver,.
6. Once you did that, choose “NameServers” in the top menu and change the primary and secondary nameservers.

If you are hosting a website or even just visiting one online, you are using domain name servers (DNS) – probably without even knowing it. Domain name servers are an important part of what makes a website work when you type it into a browser. Understanding how they work will help you understand how to change them when you set up your own Dedicated Server.

So what is a domain name server and how does it work? Every time you type a domain name (www.YourWebsite.com) into a browser, you are using the Internet’s domain name servers (DNS) to translate the familiar word-based domain name into the technical machine-readable Internet Protocol (IP) address. Domain name servers basically transfer your domain name into its IP address, so that you are properly directed to your website. Without domain name servers, typing in a domain name would come up with blank results.

Hosting your website on a reliable Dedicated Server means you will need to create your own domain name servers, so that anyone who visits your website will be directed properly to its content and the server in which it’s hosted.

If you are planning to become your own web hosting company, are looking to resell web hosting space for profit, and/or would like to provide hosting to your clients at some point in the future, you are going to need to know the differences between the types of hosting you can purchase.

Reseller Hosting is a low-cost but low-resource hosting plan, wherein you become your own web hosting company. Your clients are each given control panels of their own and you are allowed to brand these to suit your company’s image, so that your customers will never know they are hosting with the provider you’re using as a Reseller. The downside for this usually affordable hosting plan is that your customers go to you, as the web host, for billing and technical issues. They cannot simply email the big web host to get assistance, as they wouldn’t even know the bigger host exists. Another downside is the limits on storage and bandwidth – you cannot itemize how many resources you a lot to each customer. All customers get the same storage, bandwidth, emails, etc.

Dedicated Server Hosting is often much more expensive, but if you have a long list of clients to host, you can often make a greater profit from Dedicated Hosting than from Reseller Hosting, because you are only paying for one plan as opposed to paying for 50 small reseller accounts. With Dedicated Server Hosting, you can also a lot storage and bandwidth amounts to each specific customer, based on your quote of storage and bandwidth. So if you have 80GB hard drive space, you can give one customer 1GB and another 5GB, making each customer happy. You can also brand the control panel to your company’s image, as well as create your own nameservers, which will make your company look even more official.

Overall, Dedicated Server Hosting is best for companies who need a great deal of storage and bandwidth or have many customers in need of reliable hosting.
MX Records do just that!

An MX record stands for Mail exchanger record and just specifies exactly how the email is routed using SMTP (or simple mail transfer protocol). Each MX record has a priority and host name – that way the entirety of the record for your domain name will point the servers to the right places.

In layman’s terms, all domains are assigned several DNS (domain name servers) records upon registration. These DNS settings allow you and others to locate the website online through the Internet. These DNS settings includes MX records. Each record points to a specific email server so that your email can be efficiently processed on that domain name.

Step 6: Edit Files in SSH Shell

Login to your SSH Shell into your server as root and open the following 2 files to edit using the information below:

* file 1:
nano /etc/resolv.conf

From there, the file needs to be edited. Make sure it looks like this:

domain yourwebsite.com
search yourwebsite.com
nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver IP1
nameserver IP2

At this point you should save by typing ctrl+o and entering. Then, close the file by typing ctrl+x.

* file 2:
nano /etc/nameserverips

The file needs to be edited, just like File 1. Make sure it looks like this:

IP0=0
IP1=ns1.yourwebsite.com
IP2=ns2.yourwebsite.com

**Please note IP0=your server IP**

Save and close as per File 1.

Step 7: Setup Nameservers in WHM

In WHM, select Edit Server again and set your Primary Nameserver to ns1.yourwebsite.com and assign the IP Address once more – it should now be the correct IP. Then click Add an A Entry for This Nameserver and repeat the process for the Secondary Nameserver using ns2.yourwebsite.com. Make sure you save.

Then you can double check that everything is setup properly by selecting Manage Nameserver IPs in WHM. If you see the 2 IPs and nameservers, you’re all set.

Step 8: Reboot Your Dedicated Server

Get into the Shell via SSH as root and type the simple command: reboot

Step 9: Point Your Domain Nameservers

If you host with LPDedicated.com or Lunarpages, you can login via the instructions in our previous post to manage your domain nameservers. Make sure they are pointed correctly, and once they fully propagate (24 hours or so), your nameservers will be listed properly and your website will resolve on your dedicated server!

When you purchase a dedicated server hosting plan, you will need to specify which nameservers you want to use. Unlike shared web hosting where you can only use your web host’s company name servers, with dedicated web hosting you can create your own private nameservers! This means your website will point to ns1.yourwebsite.com and ns2.yourwebsite.com

Step 1: Register Your Domain Name

If you purchase dedicated web hosting with LPDedicated.com, you can get your domain name registered for free. Otherwise, you can purchase the domain from a domain registrar or if you already have it purchased, just skip this step.

Step 2: Purchase 2 Dedicated IP Addresses

LPDedicated.com provides 2 Free IP Addresses for your dedicated server, both of which can be used for this purpose. Otherwise, IPs normally cost under $5 per IP per month.

Step 3: Register Your Nameservers

If you purchased hosting with LPDedicated.com or Lunarpages, you can do this easily. Simply read through this quick tutorial on Registering Your Name Servers. If you purchased through an outside domain registrar, contact them and let them know you need to register your domain as a nameserver. Most registrars normally take about 3 days to propagate.

Step 4: Fix NDC

You’ll need to login via SSH into your server at the root and run the following command:

/scripts/updatenow
/scripts/fixndc

Then, if you’re hosting with LPDedicated.com, in WHM on the left window pane, restart DNS/Nameserver (BIND). If you’re hosting elsewhere, check with your provider for further instructions.

Step 5: Set Up Your Nameservers in WHM

Visit your WHM panel again, and select Edit Setup near the top fo the left window pane and then set the Primary Nameserver to ns1.yourwebsite.com. Then assign the IP Address and repeat the process using ns2.yourwebsite.com for the Secondary Nameserver. Make sure you save your work!

Are you interested in becoming a Web Hosting Reseller? Reselling web hosting to customers is actually easier than you might think, and sometimes, the only thing you’ll need to take care of is the billing for your clients! As you resell the web hosting space issued by another provider, you can make quite a bit of money this way.

But should you choose Reseller Web Hosting, VPS Web Hosting, or Dedicated Server Hosting?

* Reseller Web Hosting

This option is best if you would like your customers to each have a set amount of storage space, bandwidth, emails, etc. Their accounts will be the same and are most likely quite small, but they work out best if your clients just need a simple webpage or two for a small personal website. Reseller hosting can be very cheap, and you can mark up the prices as high as you’d like to make as much money as you’d like.

* VPS (Virtual Private Server) Web Hosting

Despite what you might think, it’s not a good idea to resell web hosting space on a VPS hosting plan. As you are still sharing the server resources with others, reseller hosting on a virtual private server can be draining on the server and can bog it down for everyone else. We wouldn’t recommend you use VPS as a reseller hosting option.

* Dedicated Server Hosting

This is the best option for webmasters who need various web hosting options for their clients. If one client needs 1GB storage and another needs 10GB, you can divide the total storage space amount as you see fit. The more clients you have, the bigger the dedicated server you’ll need. This is the most expensive option, but it is the most beneficial for managing multiple websites and clients – the best part is, you’ll get your own domain nameservers, so you’ll be as legitimate a company as anybody else!

Some web hosting companies don’t take into account that you may be new to their hosting terms, so if they ask you to perform a WHOIS lookup, many providers can’t understand why you don’t know what to do. However, the best dedicated server hosting provider will surely explain it to you in the simplest of terms.

WHOIS is pronounced “who is” and doesn’t stand for anything. It is merely an official database of information on every domain name in the world. While it was originally used for IT and hosting professionals to determine the owner of a domain name, many now use it to also establish who owns a specific IP address as well as for domain transfer requests.

A WHOIS request returns results for information about the domain’s owner, so you can see information such as full first and last name, mailing and billing addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and hosting-specific information such as where the domain name was purchased and where the Name Servers point.

IP or Internet Protocol addresses is simply a unique electronic address that is the main address for every website in the world. A normal IP address will look something like this 216.27.61.137 and will consist of 4 sets of numbers, which are divided into classes. Every website has its own IP address, but the reason you may never have heard of an IP before is because you are not required to know the IP of the website you’re visiting.

For example, if 216.27.61.137 was the IP address for LPDedicated.com, you would only need to type in LPDedicated.com in order to find the exact site with the IP 216.27.61.137. Domain Name Servers handle the rest of the work for you by changing the domain name LPDedicated.com into 216.27.61.137 so you don’t have to.

IP addresses can be shared across a whole server or network of sites or, in the case of dedicated server hosting, is most likely used to access a single website and server.
