I recently got an e-mail from somebody with a Virtual Private Server hosting plan, who was looking for a little help when it comes to installing an editor. This is pretty easy to do if you have CentOS installed as your operating system of choice.

You should have vi, at a minimum, installed. pico/nano should also be installed too.

If you have a CentOS VPS, you can always use: yum install <editorname> to install it, as most common editors are on the CentOS repositories.

Here’s hoping this ‘bit of information comes in handy to those of you who need it, and thanks to my anonymous e-mailer for the great VPS web hosting question.

Sometimes a dedicated web hosting deal can be too good to be true. Never let yourself fall for the advertising of a dedicated server before you take the time and consideration it takes to really check out all the services a dedicated web hosting provider is willing to provide to you.

Stay Away from the Pillow Talkers

Don’t be fooled by those people who tell you everything you want to hear. You have to sometimes get your hands dirty and give a few dedicated web hosting providers a shot before you really know how good or bad their services are.

Even then, you can not really be sure how good the deal is. I often tell people, the true measure of a good dedicated web hosting partner is not how great their uptime is – because everybody lies about that anyways. What you really need to see is how well they do with disaster, when disaster strikes.

Not even the biggest and best coupon out there in the world can fix that.

So, in the future be sure not to fall for a deal before you give the web host a shot without the deal in play. Coupons for dedicated hosting can be great, but not if you find yourself stuck with a sucky web hosting partner.

The processor, or CPU in a dedicated web hosting server is like the brain behind the machine. It is an electronic circuit that can execute the commands on the server in question.

This term has been in use in the computer industry at least since the early 1960s. The form, design and implementation of CPUs have changed dramatically since the earliest examples, but their fundamental operation remains much the same.

Early CPUs were custom-designed as a part of a larger, sometimes one-of-a-kind, computer. However, this costly method of designing custom CPUs for a particular application has largely given way to the development of mass-produced processors that are made for one or many purposes.

This standardization trend generally began in the era of discrete transistor mainframes and minicomputers and has rapidly accelerated with the popularization of the integrated circuit (IC). The IC has allowed increasingly complex CPUs to be designed and manufactured to tolerances on the order of nanometers. Both the miniaturization and standardization of CPUs have increased the presence of these digital devices in modern life far beyond the limited application of dedicated computing machines. Modern microprocessors appear in everything from automobiles to cell phones and children’s toys.

So I hope help helps to give you more information on what a CPU is, and how important it is to a dedicated hosting environment.

If you spend any time on the Internet sending e-mail or browsing the Web, then you use domain name servers without even realizing it. Domain name servers, or DNS, are an incredibly important but completely hidden part of the Internet, and they are fascinating. The DNS system forms one of the largest and most active distributed databases on the planet. Without DNS, the Internet would shut down very quickly.

In dedicated web hosting circles, you might hear the name “Plesk” tossed around. What is a Plesk, how do you use a Plesk, and why do you need a Plesk?! The Parallels Plesk Panel is a software package used by commercial web hosting companies to help you control your hosting account, VPS account or dedicated server.

Parallels Plesk Panel allows a server administrator to set up new websites, reseller accounts, e-mail accounts, and DNS entries through a web-based interface. The administrator can create client and site templates, which predetermine resource allocation parameters for the domains and/or clients.

Parallels Plesk Panel for Linux/UNIX supports multiple POSIX platforms, including Debian, Fedora, FreeBSD, Red Hat Linux, SUSE and Ubuntu. Parallels Plesk Panel for Windows supports Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 operating systems.

Parallels Plesk Panel installs custom versions of or manages versions of MySQL and PostgreSQL databases (Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine under Windows), Apache Tomcat Java platform server, ColdFusion server, as well as CounterStrike and Battlefield 1942 game servers.

When it comes to the dedicated hosting game, Plesk is one of the best control panels out there – second only to cPanel in performance and reliability.

Dedicated hosting is a tricky beast.

Knowing everything a dedicated hosting server should provide is enough to make your head spin too. So with that in mind, and to help you start the new year off right – I thought I would share with you some of the more important features to look for.

Support – You always want to make sure your dedicated hosting provider is giving you the best support possible. There is no reason a help desk ticket response should take more than one hour to at least get you word about what is going on, anything over that is ridiculous. You also want to check in on the phone options, and how the support team is staffed (over several hours, or available 24 hours).

Services - In dedicated hosting, disk space and bandwidth are important, but not the most important. The two dedicated web hosting features I would consider to be number one, would be the RAM and the CPU. When you go for dedicated hosting, you go for performance. The RAM and CPU of a server say way more about how it will perform than the disk space and bandwidth do.

I hope that helps as a reminder in 2010 of what you should be getting from a dedicated hosting provider. The new year is always a great time to re-evaluate your hosting situations, to make sure you are getting the most bang for your buck.

In the beginning, UNIX had only one editor, the line editor "ed." UNIX still has ed, but few people use it. Line-by-line editors really are adequate only for making short, quick corrections to files or programs. A medieval version of UNIX contained a new program called "ex." The most notable new feature of ex was a display editing facility which allowed a user to work with a full screen of text by giving the command vi . The new display editor proved so popular that AT&T UNIX System V included "vi" as a separate program. Vi is included in most operating systems.

This handout explains the basics of vi: creating files, moving the cursor and entering and editing text. After you have read it and practiced for a short time at your console, you should be able to do basic editing with vi. If you wish to use some of vi’s more complicated resources, we recommend a close study of the man pages.

Modes
You will encounter three different editing modes when you use vi: command, input and last line.

Command Mode
When you call vi with a command line such as

Code:

darkstar% vi editfile

you are automatically placed in Command mode. While in Command mode you can move your cursor around on the screen, view different parts of the file, delete text and carry out searches.

Input Mode

To enter text while in vi, you need to be in Input mode. You may enter Input mode by using any of five different commands: insert (i), append (a), open (o), change (c) or replace (r). To return from any Input mode to Command mode, press the escape key.

The insert command, i , puts vi in Input mode and places text before the current character.

The append command, a , puts vi in Input mode and places text after the current character. (A places text after the last character on the current line).

The open commands, o and O , open a blank line within existing text, put the cursor at the beginning of that line and put vi into Input mode. o opens a line below the current line, O opens a line above the current line.

Watch for Part 2, Coming Soon!

Recently, somebody e-mailed in asking how to find a path so they could setup a script on the dedicated server side. One of the paths were for JRE and all they had to go from was the script instructions which read.

In Red5.sh Set the value for JAVA_HOME variable. It should be the path to the folder where JRE is installed. For example:
JAVA_HOME=/opt/ray_server/jre1.x;

First place to check would be to see if JRE was installed on the server. If JDK was installed by your dedicated support team, the path is usually /usr/java/[jdk_name]/jre, where jdk_name is the name specific to JDK version. You might have ask for this to be installed by the dedicated server admins at your web host to get it all working.

Lunarpages is stepping up in performance and power with two new hosting plans I am sure you will get a kick out of. Not only are they giving people more CPU, RAM and other server resources – they are doing it at half the price of the competitors out there. Here is a little more information about both their new Xen VPS hosting packages and the new Dedicated Intel Core i7 servers.

Xen VPS Hosting

Here is a little more information from the article:

What makes Xen VPS hosting so great? Xen-powered VPS are completely independent from the hardware node, and each other. This means that you are able to run updates independently of the hardware node. This also means that one customer can’t crash a service or the server. If one front end server ceases to work, the VPS’ that were running on that server can be restarted on other Xen servers, almost instantly.

Dedicated i7 Hosting

Here is a little more from the article:

Not only does it come with the unparalleled security, control, and management options all our dedicated servers come with. It also comes packed with the best processor in the world of dedicated hosting.

What is so great about Intel? CoreT i7 processors? – Lunarpages’ Dedicated i7 Hosting Plan takes advantage of Intel’s Core i7 processors, the most recent technology from Intel. This provides a faster, more intelligent, multi-core technology that applies processing power where it’s needed most.
